Silence Editions and ALMA ZEVI are pleased to present Heidi Bucher, Gordon Matta-Clark, a new publication that brings together the two pioneering artists for the first time.

Released on the occasion of the exhibition Floors at ALMA ZEVI in Venice, the book gathers archival photographs taken in the 1970s (some of which have never been reproduced before) that offer an insight into the artists’ respective creative processes. The two artists made work that evaded categorization by fusing together elements of sculpture, painting, and performance. Gordon Matta-Clark cut into the surfaces and structures of buildings, creating fragile cavities and unexpected lightwells. Meanwhile, Heidi Bucher cast floors and walls with resins and latex, creating new surfaces that are both rough and elegant.

Using the format of the leporello, the publication brings together images that document the making of Gordon Matta-Clark’ series Bronx Floors (1972) as well as Heidi Bucher’s Borg. Heidi Bucher can be seen, in her own words, ‘skinning’ the walls and floor of her studio in Zurich while Gordon Matta-Clark’s proof prints for the series Bronx Floors document one of his most iconic interventions. This publication reminds us of the importance of original documentation to appreciate the two artists’ practices, which are ephemeral, site-specific, and performative.
